FAQS: NEW STUDENTS
FIVE QUICK TIPS:
- Hydrate before you come to class. Bring a water bottle.
- Bring a large towel that will cover your mat. We require everyone have their own mat and we sell them in the studio. We also sell towels and water. We do not rent mats for hygienic reasons.
- Moisturizer and make-up can get in the eyes when sweating causing them to burn. Cleaning the face prior to class can help. A small hand towel may also be useful in wiping sweat from your eyes.
- Do not eat heavily 2 hours before class.
- If at any time you feel light-headed, dizzy or sick, do not hesitate to take child's pose or savasana until you are ready to join the class again.
WHO IS HYB FOR?
You! HYB classes are designed for everyone. Come with an open mind and we will meet you where you are, helping you get the most from your workout. EVERY body, any size, shape, condition or background can do hot yoga and Barre!
WHAT KIND OF CLASSES DO YOU OFFER?
We offer a total body workout in a heated environment. There are 3 core types of classes: HOT Yoga, HOT Barre, and BURN. BURN is a 45 minute cardio interval training class that mixes elements of yoga and strength training with high intensity intervals. The studio will be heated between 96-100 F° depending upon the type of class.
WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE AT THE STUDIO?
The studio opens 15 minutes before each class. First time students must arrive at least 15 minutes in advance in order to fill out paperwork and have a quick orientation. Studio doors are locked when class starts, and no late students are admitted. We STRONGLY recommend that you sign up online before coming to the studio.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Lightweight, breathable and comfortable clothing is recommended. In some classes you may have the option to do inversions so fitted clothes are usually the best. Women typically wear leggings or fitted shorts and a sports bra or tank top. Men typically wear shorts and a t-shirt.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT? DO I NEED A PARENT TO SIGN FOR ME IF I AM UNDER 18?
You must be 14 or older to participate in hot classes. If you are under the age of 18 we will need a parent or legal guardian's signature to participate before the first class.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME TO CLASS?
Please bring a yoga mat, a towel, water, an open mind, and a positive attitude! If you do not yet have a yoga mat or a towel, we sell both at the studio- we do not rent mats for hygienic purposes. Please make sure you bring a yoga mat to ALL classes at HYB!
WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER DONE YOGA OR BARRE PREVIOUSLY?
We offer a variety of classes that are great for beginners and advanced students alike. Our instructors offer both advanced options and modifications for postures throughout the class. If you are new to yoga we recommend starting with "Intro to Yoga" or "Yugala Yoga". All Barre classes are reccomended for new students. One difference at HYB is that we focus on private lessons for our students. Privates are a great way to learn correct alignment and postures in a private setting with focused one-on-one attention.
WHAT ARE THE BEST YOGA CLASSES FOR BEGINNERS?
Yugala Yoga classes are a great place to begin. It is our signature set-sequence and introduces yoga vocabulary and focuses on proper alignment in a group setting. The more often you come, the more comfortable you will feel! We also recommend signing up for a private lesson to learn the basics and advance your practice. We do private lessons for Yoga and Barre.
I’M NOT FLEXIBLE, IS THIS THE RIGHT EXERCISE FOR ME?
It couldn’t be more right for you! There is a common misconception that yoga is only for flexible people. Yoga isn’t about how flexible you are right now; it’s about increasing your range of motion so that you can continue to be strong and mobile in the future. If you're not flexible, the benefits of doing yoga and barre in Far Infrared Heat are tremendous. The internal heat that your body generates along with the infrared penetration will help make those short, tight muscles long, strong and pliable.
I DON'T LIKE THE HEAT, WILL I PASS OUT?
We haven’t lost one yet! Seriously though, a lot of people often have a negative reaction when they initially hear of exercising in the heat but once they try it, they’re hooked. We recommend coming to a minimum of 5 classes in a two week period so that you can get the full experience as the heat sometimes takes a little getting used to. We heat the studio with Far Infrared Panels and it is much different than most hot yoga studios!
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I COME?
To get the most benefit we recommend (especially in the beginning) that you come as much as you can. Some people strive to come every day for the first month, but if you can come 3-4 times a week initially you will see marked improvements in your overall well being as well as notable physical changes.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING CLASS?
Your teacher will set up the exercises and then circulate the room, correcting form to help you get the most out of your time. The room is HOT, be prepared to sweat and have an intense class. It’s normal to experience a light-headed, nauseous and/or dizzy feeling the first few times in the room. Should you feel any of the above, we suggest lying down on your mat, take a few deep breathes to slow down and reconnect.
IS THIS BIKRAM YOGA?
No. Bikram Yoga is just one style of hot yoga. Bikram is a practice of 26 postures done in a specific sequence in a strict environment. Our hot classes combine the best elements from many different styles of yoga in order to give your mind and body the best workout possible! Our instructors believe in creating a fun community based environment that awakens the mind, body, and spirit.
HOW MANY CALORIES DO I BURN DURING A CLASS?
It is estimated that you can burn between 600-1200 calories in a 60-90 minute heated workout. The number of calories each person burns will vary based on age, weight, gender, and the intensity of the workout.
WHAT ARE THE MENTAL/SPIRITUAL BENEFITS?
Although we strongly believe in the spiritual and mental benefits of yoga, you won’t find this forced on you in our studio. We want to create a welcoming environment where all realms of spirituality are embraced. The goal of yoga is to quiet the distractions of the mind. With our classes, the mind and body relax so that you can relieve stress and achieve clarity and balance. What you do with that increased clarity is up to you.
WHAT IF I'M NOT A YOGI OR TEENY TINY BALLERINA?
This is a NO judgment environment - our classes are for everyone! Our studio is a welcoming environment where everyone can feel comfortable getting fit! Our classes are low-impact workouts that can be modified for any practice, flexibility, or fitness level. You will get a great workout without putting strain and stress on your joints.
CAN MEN TAKE CLASSES?
Absolutely, we are a studio for everyone and we offer a variety of awesome classes that men will love! If you are an athlete, runner, or golfer - yoga is a great complement and can help you improve! Try our BURN class…it is intense!
I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY BACK, KNEES, AND/OR HIPS. CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Generally speaking, yoga and Barre are great for people with skeletal and joint issues if you listen to your body and work to your own abilities. The combination of the Far Infrared heat and postures will help to strengthen the muscles around your bones and joints to give you more support and help in healing your body. As always, if you have any concerns please consult with your physician. Make your teacher aware of any injuries or restrictions before each class.
